MACS-2 Sergeant Major
Sergeant Major Rafael Iturrino

Sergeant Major Iturrino enlisted in the Marine Corps on 9 December 1997.  He reported to Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina for recruit training on 21 January 1998. Sergeant Major Iturrino was promoted Private First Class Meritorious.

After graduating recruit training, he was assigned to Infantry Training Battalion (ITB) at Camp Geiger, North Carolina for basic infantry training as a 0331 Machine Gunner.

After completing ITB, in June of 1998, Sergeant Major Iturrino was assigned to Company L, 3d Battalion 8th Marines.  He served as a Machine Gunner, Team Leader, and Squad Leader.  Sergeant Major Iturrino was promoted to Lance Corporal, Corporal, and Sergeant during this tour of duty, and was deployed to the Mediterranean Sea from April 1999 to October 1999 with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, Special Operations Capable.  While deployed, he participated in Operations ALLIED FORCE, SHINING HOPE, and JOINT GUARDIAN in Kosovo and Albania and Operation AVID RESPONSE in Turkey.  He also deployed in December of 2000 to Okinawa, Japan, Hokkaido, Japan, and Pohang, South Korea as part of the Unit Deployment Program. 

Sergeant Major Iturrino reported to the Basic Recruiter’s Course at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California in October of 2001. Upon completing the Basic Recruiter Course, he was assigned to Recruiting Station, Garden City, New York. During this tour of duty, Sergeant Major Iturrino served as an area canvassing recruiter.

After completing a successful tour on recruiting duty, Sergeant Major Iturrino was assigned to  Weapons Company, 3d Battalion, 2nd Marines in February of 2005.  During this tour, he served as a Vehicle Commander Mobile Assault Platoon, Scout Sniper Platoon Sergeant, and India Company Platoon Sergeant, deploying to the Al Qaim, Habbiniyah areas of Iraq, participating in Operation Matador, Operation Quick Strike, and Operation Spear in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. During this tour of duty, Sergeant Major Iturrino was promoted to Staff Sergeant.

Sergeant Major Iturrino reported to Drill Instructor School at Parris Island, South Carolina in September of 2007. After graduating Class 1-08, Sergeant Major Iturrino was assigned to Echo Company 2nd Recruit Training Battalion as a Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, and Series Gunnery. Sergeant Major Iturrino was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in November of 2009 and was reassigned as Fox Company Series Gunnery Sergeant.  In January of 2010, he was selected and assigned to Drill Instructor School as a Squad Instructor where he served as the basic warrior training instructor.

After completing a successful tour as a Drill Instructor, Sergeant Major Iturrino was assigned to 2nd Battalion 4th Marines in April of 2011. During this tour, he served as the senior enlisted advisor for the embedded training teams, deploying to Musa Qala areas of Afghanistan, participating in Operation Alekhines Gun in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. 
In April 2012, he was reassigned to Fox Company, where he served as the Company Gunnery Sergeant.  During this tour, Sergeant Major Iturrino was promoted to First Sergeant.

Sergeant Major Iturrino was selected for First Sergeant and reported to 2nd Battalion 11th Marines April of 2013 where he served as Battery K First Sergeant. During this tour of duty, Sergeant Major Iturrino was deployed to Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan, as part of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit.

In January 2016, Sergeant Major Iturrino was assigned to 4th Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company in West Palm Beach, Florida. During this tour of duty, he served as the family readiness officer, Toys for Tots coordinator, and Company First Sergeant.

In January of 2018, Sergeant Major Iturrino was frocked to his present rank and was assigned as the Sergeant Major for Marine Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron 2, Marine Air Station, Cherry Point, North Carolina.

In April of 2020, Sergeant Major Iturrino assumed his current post as the Squadron Sergeant Major for Marine Air Control Squadron 2.

Sergeant Major Iturrino holds an AA in Business Administration and is pursuing a BA degree in Business Administration/Human Resource.

Sergeant Major Iturrino’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device (gold star in lieu of third award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device (gold star in lieu of second award),  Combat Action Ribbon (gold star in lieu of third award).
