Command Biographies
MASS-1 Commanding Officer
Lieutenant Colonel Martin R. Bebell

A native of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Lieutenant Colonel Martin R. Bebell was commissioned a Second Lieutenant upon graduation from University of Florida in 2005.  Following The Basic School and the Air Support Control Officer Course, 2ndLt Bebell reported to Marine Air Support Squadron 3 (MASS-3) aboard Camp Pendleton, CA.

LtCol Bebell’s operational assignments include: MASS-3 from 2006-2010 which included three deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, serving as Tactical Air Director / Helicopter Director / Air Support Liaison Team OIC for the 13th MEU in Al Anbar, Iraq (2007); Operations Officer / Deputy OIC Border Transition Team 4210 in Al Anbar, Iraq (2008); and Air Support Element OIC for Regimental Combat Team 7 and Senior Air Director in the 1st Marine Division Direct Air Support Center in Helmand Province, Afghanistan (2010). Once again at MASS-3 from 2014-2017, LtCol Bebell served as Air Support Company Commander, Assistant Operations Officer, and Operations Officer. Most recently, from 2021-2023, LtCol Bebell served as the MACG-38 Executive Officer. 

LtCol Bebell also served in a variety of International Affairs Program assignments as a Middle East and Western European Foreign Area Officer: Foreign Area Officer graduate student at Naval Postgraduate School, Arabic language student, and Company Commander at the Defense Language Institute (2010-2013); Middle East Foreign Area Officer based out of the U.S. Embassy in Amman, Jordan (2013-2014); USMC Exchange Officer at the Centro Superior de Estudios de la Defensa Nacional (Spanish War College) in Madrid, Spain (2018-2019); and Middle East Foreign Area Officer and G-2 Current Operations Officer (2019-2021). 

LtCol Bebell is a graduate of Expeditionary Warfare School (Non-Resident), Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course, USMC Command & Staff College (Non-Resident), Spanish Command and Staff College, Naval Postgraduate School, and the Defense Language Institute (for Arabic and Spanish). He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from University of Florida, a Master’s in Middle East Security Studies from the Naval Postgraduate School, a Master’s in European Security and Defense from the University of Nebrija in Madrid, Spain, as well as Associate of Arts degrees in both Arabic and Spanish. 

LtCol Bebell personal decorations include Meritorious Service Medal with one gold star, Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal with one gold star, and Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal with one gold star.
